A few years ago one of my favorite clients came in about 6 months after retiring and said to me with a chuckle, “Retirement is the best! It’s like every day is a Saturday, and you get to do whatever you want all the time!”

But for some, this is not always the case. Retirement is new and exciting but can also be scary and uncertain as you transition into this uncharted territory. Some people may feel as if they are losing a piece of their financial security and often even a piece of their identity that was wrapped up in their career for all those years. I cannot tell you how often I run into people that wanted to retire years ago, but don’t feel like they have the financial security to make the change. And here is the part that bums me out; the reality is that many of these people DO have the financial ability to retire comfortably, but they simply do not know it. That is where we can help. Three keys to a good roadmap:

The roadmap starts with the end in mind. What are your goals? Where do you want to end up? How do you want it to look? What would you like to do along the way?
The roadmap must be realistic. Your roadmap must start with where you are currently. It must make realistic assumptions. It must have contingencies to compensate for the changes you might make in the future.
The roadmap should be interactive. Let’s be honest. No one uses maps anymore—we all use our smartphones. Why? Because they have real-time information. They know where you are, what the traffic is like, and give you turn-by-turn instructions. That's where we come in.
